About David Normal and “Pulp and Circumstance”:

David Normal, hell or high water, is dedicated to his art.  Always striving for his personal best, he meets the world on his own terms with a deeply imaginative vision sustained by deep philosophical and conceptual underpinnings.  Beginning his career with punk flyers in the late ‘80s, his work has always been eclectic in style, as well as encompassing a diverse array of media – animation, theater, installation, performance art, video and more.  These accomplishments were recognized in a museum show of his “Crossroads of Curiosity” suite of murals at the British Library in London in 2015.

“Pulp and Circumstance, Digital Collages”, currently on display at Moshi Moshi, is a series of digital collages based on Pulp magazine covers from the 1920s – 1960s.  In Normal’s wide ranging studies of art; illustration from the golden age of the pulps has always been a perennial favorite genre.  The stylistic uniformity of the pulp illustrations lends itself to a “seamless” approach to collage making, favored by Normal, wherein the finished work appears not so much as a collage, but as an illustration rendered by one artist.  With this seamless approach Normal directs the viewers attention especially to the narrative and symbolism of the art.  With playful irreverence, “Pulp and Circumstance” explores scientific, religious, erotic and psychological themes that are simultaneously allegories for the drama of Normal’s personal life.
